The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Dr Mark K. Smith presented a paper at the Social Media for Internal Communications conference organised by Melcrum on the 10th February 2010. Entitled 'The Good the bad and the ugly of social media' this paper attempted to quantify where possible the impact that companies can have when they work with social media. Examples used included Oxfam and their use of ipadio from Haiti and Sport England's work with Facebook to mobilise Facebook users to take part in more physical activity.
Audio of the paper, the referenced video and audio are provided below and the slides and full paper as two links to the right.
Presenting the paper, Mark argues that "there is no such thing as internal communications" due to the evolution of social media, and that controlling what people are saying about your brand is now more challenging because whether or not your company participate in social media, "the conversation has already begun". Mark presents a number of case studies to illustrate this - the good, the bad and the really quite ugly.
